Burke County land records entry #1850, page 615 -- Jesse Burgan, 200 acres on Cain Creek that empties into the north side of Catawba River below Ephram Mc Leans entry. Entered June 18, 1779. Transferred to Elizabeth Burchfield. The word transfoerred means Elizabeth bought the land from Jesse Burgan before the land grant was finalized. She would also have paid for it with her own money. Normally in this period women did not have land entered into their own name.

Elizabeth Burchfield appears on the 1796 and 1797 Entry Takers (tax) Returns for Burke County. On September 25, 1798, Elizabeth Burchfield filed a bill of sale for a horse she sold to William England. Robert Carithers and Reuben Dement were wittnesses tot he sale.

Elizabeth's estate is first mentioned in October 1801 and her estate sale is mentioned in April 1802. It was not unusual for an estate settlement to be delayed until after the death of the widow especially if there was no will and she did not re-marry. Robert Sr. did not have time to make his will before his death.
