!OBIT: "Mrs. Elizabeth B. MCCORKLE Passed Away on Wednedsay-She Came Across the Plains in l843 by Oxen Team, and Settled on Howell Prairie-Mrs. Elizabeth B. MCCORKLE, a pioneer of l843, died at Howell, on Wednesday, September 26, aged 78 years. Mrs. Elizabeth Brooks MCCORKLE was born in Grainger county, Tennessee, in l822. Her parents, John and Temperance HOWELL, took her to Indiana in l828. In l837 she moved to Missouri where she met and married George F. MCCORKLE, in l840. They crossed the plains to Oregon by ox team in l843. They remained at Oregon City one year. In l844 they moved to and settled on Howell Prairie, Oregon. There she resided until her demise. She was the mother of eight children, four of whom are living. They are: Isabelle LOONEY, Josephine BAYLESS, J. H. MCCORKLE and M. A. MCCORKLE. With the last named she lived on her homestead until her death. She was the mother of the first white child born on Howell prairie. She became a member of the church in her early youth and remained a Christian until her death. A large concourse of friends attended her funeral and participated in the last sad rites over her remains. Her husband, George F. MCCORKLE, died in July, l89l."
