The will of Hugh Hall, alleged son of John Hall & Anne Bolling, was proved, 1771, Brunswick Co., VA (Brunswick Co., VA, Will Book 4, Pt. 1, p. 51). In this will, Hugh names his son Dixon, son William, wife Mary, and mentions his 5 sons & daughter (no names).
Mary married (2) Samuel Seward and (3) William Parham. Mary's will was proved 1788, Sussex Co., VA (Sussex Co., VA, Will Book D, p. 475). In this will, Mary names her son Dixon Hall, son Bolling Hall, and dau. Polly Dixon Seward.
The other 2 sons of Hugh Hall and Mary are named in Brunswick Co., VA, guardian accounts --

The daughter named in Hugh Hall's will is believed to be Elizabeth Hugh Hall. Southampton Co., VA, marriage records state that the Elizabeth Hugh Hall who married Charles Hines was a dau. of Hugh Hall. A letter from Robert Dixon, grandson of Elizabeth Hugh Hall, says that his mother [Patsy Hall Hines] is a “niece of old uncle Bolling Hales (sic).”

The research of Dr. William B. Hall [1] says that Elizabeth Hugh Hall who married Charles Hines is not a child of the Hugh Hall who died 1771, Brunswick Co., VA.

This is contradicted in a letter from Robert Dixon [grandson of Elizabeth Hugh Hall] to his son. From Nancy Wilson -- “In Robert's [Robert H. Dixon] letters to his son Robert Emmett [Dixon], he writes: ‘The relation you speak of must have come through the Hales [sic]. My mother was Hines [My note - she was Patsy Hall Hines, wife of Henry Dixon.]. But she was a neice of old Uncle Bolling Hales [sic]. My mother and Aunt Betsy Tyrus [sic], were sisters. If I knew who Mr. Lamite (?) was, I could tell you the relationship.’” [My note -- Betsy “Tyrus” was Elizabeth Hines, wife of Lewis Tyus.]

Dr. Hall’s assertion is also contradicted in Joseph Addison Turner’s biography of his father, William Turner [William Turner was a grandson of Charles Hines and Elizabeth Hugh Hall], written in 1864-1865. J. A. Turner writes, “Bolling Hall was a brother of the mother [Elizabeth Hugh Hall] of my father’s [William Turner] mother [Rhoda Hines].” [2] Joseph Addison Turner also reproduces a letter, dated 17 Dec 1813, from Bolling Hall to William Turner, which closes with the words, “Give my love to your father, mother, brother, and sisters, and to all our relations.” [3]

In another issue of The Countryman, writing about the Holt family, Joseph Addison Turner says, “This [Hines Holt, Sr.] was the father of Hon. Hines Holt of Columbus -- the old man [Hines Holt, Sr.] having married the aunt [Polly Dixon Seward] of my father’s [William Turner] mother [Rhoda Hines].” [4]

[1] Research of William B. Hall, M. D., of Selma, AL. This consists of correspondence on file in the DAR Library, Washington, D.C., between Dr. Hall and the Registrar General of the DAR. These letters were written during the 1930s.
