September 13, 2004 Dear Shaun Martin, Thank you for your inquiry regarding Eliza Schlagel Martin and her husband William H. Martin. Family research at Grove Cemetery remains a time-consuming manual operation but the date of January 19, 1901 helped me find Eliza Martin right away. Here is her information: Lot N72 in the Garden of Blessings (formerly Section B) She was the 5,076th person to be interred here. Born in Butler County, she died on January 16 in Pittsburgh and was interred on January 19, 1901. Her next of kin was her husband, William H. Martin. She was 58 years when she died of cancer. Our index card for this lot shows that William H. Martin purchased lot N72 but seems to have moved on because only Eliza Martin, Ida Martin (22 years old when she in died September 1888) and John Martin (1 month old when he died in April 1904) are in this 150 ft. lot. The fourth grave would be at your disposal if you are the heir in the Martin Family, and you would have the option of using it for one vault burial + one cremation on top, or two cremation burials. Ida has a weathered but still legible headstone, the graves of Eliza and Little John have no memorial. If a bronze memorial would be desirable, I would be happy to assist in your design of two single or a double memorial that would celebrate their lives. If you provide your mailing address and kindly make a donation (usually $25 or more or other) that will benefit Grove Cemetery 100%, I will gladly send you our brochure, price guide and decorating guidelines as well as a copy of our index card and a segment of the lot map for the Garden of Blessings. For the time being, I have entered your name and E-mail in our Family Registry as a living descendant of Eliza Martin. Sincerely, Helga Cook P.S. The Research Center for Beaver County and Local History, 1301 7th Avenue, Beaver Falls PA 15010 may be helpful in your family research. The Center is located in the Beaver Falls Library Building and the telephone number is 724-847-9253. ______________________________________________________________________________________________

In 1860 an Elizabeth Martin is listed as living in the household of Andrew Croup and Sarah (Schlagel) Croup, just below the family of Henry Slagle. Elizabeth Martin of 1860 is age 37, while Eliza Slagle of 1850 is age 19, Eliza Martin of 1870 is age 38, and Eliza Martin of 1880 is 49. There is no William Martin listed in 1860. Elizabeth Martin of 1860 is listed with two children, Isabella (age 5) and Elizabeth (age 2). The ages and birth order of these children are consistent with Isabella and Elizabeth Martin who appear in the 1870 census. There is about a five-year gap in age between Elizabeth Martin (born about 1858-1859) and Jane Martin (born about 1864). Perhaps William Martin was serving in the army in 1860, and perhaps fought in the Civil War. It could be that the person answering the census questions in the Croup household did not know Eliza's real name or age.
