Eliza Gallois
A memorial service will be held in San Francisco tomorrow for Eliza Gallois, a once-prominent member of international society. She died Friday at age 99 in Palm Springs.
She was the wife of the late John Gallois, a San Francisco financier. Frequent world travelers, they were friends with statesmen and stars and maintained homes at various times in Palm Springs, Jamaica and Oregon as well as in San Francisco.
Born Eliza McMullin in Oakland, she was descended from a family that came to early San Francisco from the South. Her grandfather, Colonel John (Jack) Hays, was founder of the Texas Rangers, was the U.S. Surveyor General and the first sheriff of San Francisco. Mrs. Gallois "was a strongly spoken and outstanding character," said a longtime acquaintance. "In her day, she was a very independent and attractive woman who just said exactly what the hell she thought, whether it was right or wrong."
The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Notre Dame Des Victoires Church, 566 Bush Street, San Francisco.
