Eliza Marshall was baptised on 3rd June 1821 at Kimpton in Hertfordshire, daughter of Elizabeth Marshall, formerly Bent, and her husband William Marshall, an agricultural labourer. The family lived in the hamlet of Peters Green when Eliza was baptised, but shortly after her birth moved to the neighbouring parish of King's Walden. Eliza's mother died in 1826, when Eliza was only four years old.
In 1841, Eliza had a daughter in the nearby town of Luton, whom she called Elizabeth. The 1841 census finds Eliza living at Diamond End in King's Walden with her daughter, father and some of here siblings.
In 1843 Eliza was married in Luton to a bricklayer called James Martin. They settled in the High Town area of the town and had a further eleven children together between 1844 and 1865, although one died young. Eliza worked as a straw bonnet sewer in Luton's hat making industry. By 1871 they were living at 6 York Street.
James died in 1872, aged 48. Eliza survived him by nine years. She appears in the 1881 census living with her son William, still at 6 York Street. She died later that year, aged 60.
