Facts and Events
Elias isn't listed by name in the 1860 Census, meaning he was most likely in servitude at one of the nearby plantations in Legette township. Figuring out exactly which plantation that might have been is a daunting proposition, to say the least, as slaves were only enumerated by sex and age range; and there were 9,951 slaves distributed amongst 778 slaveholders in Marion county in 1860. Elias lists his father as being from Virginia in the 1900 census. If this is the case, his father was presumably sold, likely out of Richmond, to one of the plantations in Marion county where he met Elias' mother. Other than circumstantial evidence, there is absolutely nothing to prove that Joshim Moses and/or Dramur Moses were Elias' parents. Both of them lived in a neighbouring township, were of approximately the right age, and were, if not Elias' parents, likely close relations. However, more research is needed to establish a link. Likewise, Isaac, Joshua, Elijah and James are of about the right age to have been Elias' siblings and/or Joshim and/or Dramur's sons, but the relation is not proved and should be considered very tentative. According to one of his granddaughters, Elias and his son Benjamin "Bennie" Moses went on to become successful farmers there, raising rice and cotton.
