Burnham enlisted in the Fourth Regt. Conn. Vol. Infantry. After serving in the field about seven month, the regiment was ordered to garrison a fort at Arlington Heights, Va., where it was changed to the First Conn. Heavy Artillery. They were at the siege of Yorktown, manning the heaviest batteries that were ever planted on this continent. At Malvern Hill they had fifteen guns planted upon a commanding position, that did good service. At the end of three years he reenlisted and remained in the service till the 22nd of August, 1865, in all four years and three months. |
