In 1849, Edward went to California for the Gold Rush with his cousin, Gilbert Barker Wardwell (son of Simon Wardwell II). They shipped on the bark Daniel Webster which sailed from Long Wharf, Boston, on Sunday, September 23, 1849, about 3 pm, J. C. Higgins of Bucksport, Maine, Captain. The ship arrived at Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, on November 27, 1849; left December 4, 1849 and arrived at Valparaiso, Chile, on February 20, 1850. Living in Andover at 1860 census with real estate valued at $1050 and personal estate of $100. Living in Worcester at 1870 census with personal estate valued at $3000. Living in Andover at 1880 census. He is called "Edmund" in the church death record. Listed in 1871 Worcester Directory, living at 7 King Street and working for Ware, Pratt & Co.

Death is also recorded at the Danvers State Lunatic Hospital from a cerebral tumor.

Gravestone Inscription reads: "Ye Are Not Bound, The Soul of Things Is Sweet. The Heart of Being is Celestial Rest ..."
