BIOGRAPHY: KNIGHT/GORTON April 10, 1999 Chris Knight swrad@juno.com Looking for any info. on Captain Edward KNIGHT (born ca. 1734) and his wife, Patience GORTON. The couple was from Cranston, Rhode Island, but were in Pomfret by 1783. In the 1790 census, Edward KNIGHT is listed. A son of Captain Edward KNIGHT, Noel KNIGHT, was born in Dec. 2, 1769. He married Martha WHITE (born Nov. 1, 1774), daughter of Adams WHITE and Hannah CAPRON. The first son of Noel and Martha was Gorton KNIGHT, born July 23, 1793 in Connecticut (undoubtedly in Pomfret) before the family moved to New Woodstock, New York. No one seems to know what happened to Captain Edward KNIGHT. His wife, Patience (GORTON) KNIGHT is said to have died in Pomfret. Desparately looking for some evidence of dates/place of marriage for Noel KNIGHT and Martha WHITE as well as place of birth of Gorton KNIGHT. Also, what happened to Captain Edward KNIGHT? Where/when did he die? Also, same for Patience GORTON. Both Captain Edward KNIGHT and Adams WHITE attended town meetings per records. I believe the KNIGHTs were of the Baptist religion.

1774 Cranston, Rhode Island Colony Census: Knight, Edward: Males age 16 and over = 3. Males age 16 - = 2. Females 16 and over = 2. Females 16 - = 3. Total = 10. Note: anyone age 16 in this census would've been born 1757-1758. (1) male under 16 is Noel. (2) females under 16 are Amy and Anna. Patience would be (1) female over 16. Edward would be (1) male over 16. This leaves (5) persons unaccounted for: (2) males over 16 (born before 1759), (1) male under 16 (born 1759-1774) (suspect Andrew Knight of Farmersville, NY 1850/1855), (1) female over 16 (born before 1759), and (1) female under 16 (born 1759-1774).

The family tree file and photos are now on www.genealogy.com/users/k/n/i/Christian-G-Knight/ . There is also a link to Glenn Knight's information from there. If you are a descendant of Richard Knight and Sarah Rogers and would like your page linked, drop me an email.

I am researching my gx5 grandfather, Captain Edward Knight, a descendant of Richard Knight and Sarah Rogers of Warwick, Rhode Island. Notes regarding Edward Knight and supporting families follow:

Lived in Pomfret, Connecticut. Captain in the Revolutionary War - Cranston, Rhode Island 3rd Militia.

NOT listed in index called "Rhode Island Freemen 1747-1755" - under age? If not a Freeman in 1755, then born AFTER 1734.

>From RIGR Vol ? (Jan. 1982) , page 268: "KNIGHT, Robert, of Cr (Cranston), yeoman. Will dated 21 Dec 1767, proved 24 Aug 1771, pgs 339-340. Mentions: Wife Mary Knight. Enumerated in the 1776 Rhode Island Military Census as having a regimental role in the Militia Force.

Enumerated in the 1777 Rhode Island Militia Census (16-50 years old), able to bear arms, Cranston. If 16-50 years old in 1777, then range for birth = 1727-1761.

1782 Rhode Island Colony Census: Edward Knight not in index. Gone by census time in 1782 to CT.

Attended following town meetings in Pomfret, Windham County, Connecticut (from Pomfret Town Vital Records - Microfilm LDS Church):

Dec. 2, 1782 (chosen as a surveyor of highways) Dec. 15, 1783 (chosen as a surveyor of highways) Dec. 12, 1785 (chosen as a surveyor of highways) Dec. 3, 1787 (chosen as a surveyor of highways)

1790 Connecticut census for Pomfret Town: Name of head of family: Knight, Edward Free white males of 16 years and upward (born BEFORE 1775): 3 Free white males under 16 years (born 1774-1790): 2 Free white females, including heads of families: 5

If had daughter Amy born in 1762, then born BEFORE 1746.

His mother, Mary Potter, was born circa 1690 per Cooper. She would've been about 50 years old in 1740. Date range of birth (very high confidence level) = 1734-1740.

Another possible child of Captain Edward Knight and Patience Gorton is Andrew Knight living in Farmersville, Cattaraugus County, NY in 1850. Andrew Knight has a tombstone next to Gorton Knight in Elton Cemetery. Andrew Knight also lived in Pittsfield, New York about 25 miles away from Noel Knight in New Woodstock.

Per an internet source, Captain Edward Knight was one of 2 appointed by the town of Cranston to help oversee the dispersement of John Gorton's estate on Aug. 4, 1777. The other person was a son-in-law named Abraham Chase. Source is Patricia L. Stormo.
