Edward Jordan’s origins have yet to be established. The age given when he died suggests that he was born around 1753. His first confirmed sighting is on 27th October 1777, when he married Ruth Holiday at Horley in Surrey.

Between 1778 and 1797 Edward and Ruth had nine children at Horley. One of their sons, Leonard Thomas, was not baptised until he was an adult, and his baptism record from 1818 notes that Edward was a labourer.

Edward’s eldest daughter, Lucy, married in 1804. Edward’s first known grandchild was born in 1809.

In September 1805 Edward’s daughter Susannah married, but then died just two months after her marriage, aged twenty.

Ruth died in March 1817. She was said to be 62 years old. She and Edward had been married for 39 years. Ruth’s burial record notes that her last abode was at Horley Common, which was on the southern edge of the parish of Horley.

Edward outlived Ruth by fifteen years. He went to live at Worth in Sussex, the parish immediately south of Horley. His daughter Lucy had married at Worth, whilst his youngest daughter Frusannah lived at Worth with her husband and children from the early 1830s.

Edward died in 1832, being buried back at Horley on 14th July. He was said to be 79 years old.
