DR. HILL IS STRICKEN

AGED PHYSICIAN SUCCUMBS IN PRESENCE OF COURT

Had Been Taken to Courthouse for Examination of His Mental Condition When the Fatal Stroke Came - Used to Practice in Sparta While the county court this afternoon was conducting a hearing for the purpose of determining the mental condition of Dr. E. C. Hill, seventy-five years old, and long a familiar figure on the streets of St. Joseph, the aged physician was stricken with heart disease, and died within a few minutes. As the body was being removed from the courtroom, a wedding party with Mrs. Sadie Walker and Frank Bell, both of the county, as principals, made its way into the room, and the couple was united in marriage by Presiding Judge T.J. Hill. Doctor Hill had been in failing health for a number of years, and yesterday he was found by the police wandering about the streets in a dazed condition. He was sent to Central Police Station and early this afternoon he was taken to the courthouse for examination by the county court with a view to commitment to the State Hospital. He became ill while being removed from the police ambulance, but after a rest in the corridor of the courthouse, said he felt better and was taken before the county judges. Soon after the hearing began, he suddenly toppled over, and a few minutes later he was pronounced dead by Drs. C.R. Woodson, J.K. Graham, J.I. Byrne, and George M. Boteler, who were in attendance as witnesses at the hearing. The body was removed to Heaton-BeGole's after it had been viewed by Dr. T.J. Lynch, coroner, who announced that an inquest would not be necessary.

Doctor Hill was a widower, his wife having been dead about five years. In the early days of the county he was a prominent practitioner in the neighborhood of Sparta, in the south part of the county. Of late years, he had lived in St. Joseph and made a living by selling an ointment that he prepared. He is survived by a son, Edward Hill, who lives on a farm south of the city, and a daughter, Mrs. Emmie Bradshaw, in North St. Joseph. St. Joseph News-Press, dated October 20, 1913, front page.

DR. E.C. HILL SUCCUMBS IN COURTHOUSE

Was Familiar Figure on Streets With Satchel Containing a Remedy He Sold

While Dr. E.C. Hill, 75 years old, was being led through the courthouse corridors yesterday afternoon to the county courtroom, where physicians had assembled to pass on his mental condition, he sank to the floor as the result of an attack of heart disease, was carried into the courtroom, and died five minutes later.

Attending the aged physician were Dr. C.R. Woodson, Dr. J.J. Byrne, Dr. J.K. Graham, and Dr. G. M. Boteler, all of whom were in the courtroom at the time. After the death the body was viewed by Coroner Lynch, who decided an inquest was unnecessary. The body was removed to the Heaton-BeGole undertaking rooms.

Dr. Hill was a familiar figure on the streets. He usually carried a satchel which contained a remedy which he manufactured and sold. He was found wandering on the streets Sunday and taken in charge by the police. He had lived in the county many years and was formerly a practicing physician in Sparta. Surviving are a son, Edward Hill, and a daughter, Mrs. E. Bradshaw.
