At the time these letters to his father, Lieut-Col. N.F. MacNachtan were written, he was a Sergeant, 4th Battery, 1st Brigade, C.F.A.
In addition to his five letters there are a number of other letters from Port Hope and Cobourg soldiers. Several of them refer to Edmund as "Ted."
