    In the name of God Amen The Eleaventh daie of July 1626 And in the yeare of the Raigne of our Soveraigne Lord Charles by the grace of god King of England Scotland France and Ireland Defender of the faith &c the second I Sir Edmund Bowyer of Camberwel in the Countie of Surrey knt being in health of bodie of perfect memorie and remembrance; for which I render all praise and thanks unto Allmightie god, for doubt of casuall chaunce, or sudden sickness, whereby I maie be prevented of Declaring my meaning. Doe nowe make and ordaine my last will and testament in writing in manner and forme following First renouncing all former wills by me made heretofore, not onelie in the lief time of my most loving and kind wief who nowe is with god, but alsoe since her decease I doe wholie and hartilie bequeath my soule unto Allmightie god my maker and Creator beleeving undoubtedly that I shalbe partaker of the ioyes in heaven perpetuallie by and through the death and passion of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ the sonne of god, who hath shed his most precious blood, upon the Crosse for the Redempcon of all mankinde. And I doe from the bottome of my hart with all penitencye aske god mercie and forgiveness of all my sinnes and offences comitted against his Divine Maiestie in this wretched world and vale of missery, And I doe most humblie beseech his omnipotencie of his infinite mercye to pardon my sinnes and offences, and to remitt my punishments deserved. And as for my wretched bodie I doe herby intreate my executors, that it be Decentlie buried and interred into the ground in the Chauncell of the parish Church of Camberwell aforesaid, neere the place where my moste vertuous wief the Ladie Katherine was buried, and that to be Donne in the daie time, my bodye not to be bowelled, but to goe to the earth as I came into this world, and with such decencye as fitteth the honor of a Knight. And I will and require my executors, that they shall within one yeare next after my decease, make a Monument or Tombe of Alabaster, white Marble and Jett, or such other stone as they shall thinke fitt, in the place of the Church where the Holie Water Sprinckle in former time did stand, Betweene the Chauncell and our Ladie Chappell, where Mr. Scott doth sitt, for my bodie and the bodie of my Ladie Katherine. Item I give unto Threescore poore men to attend my funerall to everie one a mourning gowne, and two shillinges a peece in money, And such mourninge Cloth to my frendes as my executors shall thinke fitt, of which poore I would have thirty at the least dwelling in Camberwell parish the rest of Wansworth Newington Saint Georges and Lambeth parishes. Item I devise unto my Nephewe Edmond Bowyer sonne of my brother Gregory Bowyer, and to his heires for ever, All those my messuage, tenem’t Barnes, Stables and outhowses whatsoever; and all gardens orchards Lands Woodes and pounds with the appurtenances whatsoever thereunto belonging, lying in the parishes of Crowhurst and Oxsteed in the Countie of Surrey nowe in the occupacon or tenure of Alexander Hollowaye of Crowhurst aforesaid for assureing whereof my brother John Bowyer being ioynttenant with me, in the purchase, half ioyieed with me in the assureance and Conveyance to him thereof. Item I will and devise unto my nephewe John Bowyer, second sonne to my said brother Gregory Bowyer and to his heires, all that my Tenement and Lands thereunto belonging and letten, lying in Wansworth in the said Countie of Surrey in the tenure and occupacon of Widdowe Calvert, or her assignes, for the better assurance thereof I have conveyed the same to him by Conveyance by deede in my lief time. Item I give and bequeath to my Nephew William Strachey Fiftie poundes, and to his wief Twentie poundes, Item I give and bequeath to my ould servant Elizabeth Duke one Anuitie of Three poundes per annum during her lief to be paid by my Leassees hereafter named, at two most usuall feasts in the yeare, vidlt, at the feast of the Annunciaon of the blessed virgine Marie, and Saint Michaell the Archangell by even porcons, And to begin at the first of those feasts that shall happen next after my death Item I will and devise unto my Nephew Mr. Francis Muschampe Esquior, and John Hendly gentilman, and to my two trustie servantes Martin Clerke and James Draper, and to theire heires forever, to the use of the poore of Camberwell, all those three Tenements which I newely builded upon an ould foundacon in Camberwell, being in the severall tenures and occupacons of John Sturkey Clerke of the parish James Sharpe and John Lane, all which I have allready in my life time settled by Deed, And my mynd and will is, That the said Francis Muschampe John Hendly Martin Clerke and James Draper with the Overseers of the poore of Camberwell for the time being shall receive the rents and proffitts of the said howses, and distribute it weekly or otherwise to Releeve the poore of Camberwell, as they shall thinke fitt Item I devise and give unto my Nephewe Sir John Byne knight, my black wrought Velvett Gowne, and a mourninge gowene, Item I give unto his Ladie my wiefs border of gould sett with pearle & stone and a mourning gowne, Item I give and bequeath to my Neece Jane Byne daughter of Sir John Byne and nowe wief of Mr. Francis Muschamp Esquior my best Crimson Taffita Quilt, my two long Cushions imbrodered, alsoe my Needlworke cushion wrought with gould and silke wherein are my armes and my wives, alsoe a girdle of one and Thirtie Angells of gould which she hath allready in her custodie, And a suite of my best Damaske Table cloathes, Cuppbord cloathes, Towells and Napkins, two of my silver dishes, two of my silver platters, Alsoe the neste of guilt bowles that the Ladie Ramsey gave me, and the Cover of them, and all the houshold stuff, that she hath in her Chamber and Custodie my wiefs hattband sett with pearle and gould Buttons and the Chaine of pearle and gould which my neece Jane nowe weareth, and my Jewell sett with stone and pearle which I bought of Sir Hugh Browne, Alsoe to her and husband mourninge Gownes. Item I give unto my cosen Warwicke a mourning gowne, unto my sister Stanley two Jacobusses, And to her daughter Katherine Five poundes, To my nephewe James Byne Fiftie poundes, To Mr Edmund Byne sonne of Sir John Byne my [...] Cupp of silver and guilt. Item I bequeath to my godsonne Edmund Bowyer sonne of my brother Beniamyne Bowyer my Box and Deske being in my privat studie, and all my bookes which are in my private study at my house, and studdye att Lincolnes Inne., And alsoe my Saphire stone Ring of gould that I usuallie weare aboute my neck, Item I bequeath to Margery Hall myne and my wiefs ould servant, Threescore and sixe pounds Thirteene shilllinges and fower pence, Alsoe I give unto her my featherbedd whereon I shall ly at the time of my death, And all the Bowlsters pillowes, Blanketts and Coverletts thereunto belonging, alsoe a mourning gowne. Item I will and devise that all the somes I have given to James Byne and William Strachey my Nephewes, and to Margerie Hall my ould servant shalbe paid by my Executors and Leasees as they shall receive the proffitts out of my land in manner and forme, as in the Lease to them by me made is expressed. And the rest of my Rents to be Received by my said Leasees (after my funerall charges and making my Tombe discharged, and my debts paid) shall paie and discharge the rest of the legacies hereby given by me with all conveniency) , if my personall estate will not extend unto it. Item I bequeath to all my men servants, Fosterboy and maide servants that have not allready legacies bequeathed them Three pounds sixe shillinges and Eight Pence a peece, And I will that my executors shall give (over and above the money and Gownes that I have given) such other money and gownes and cloakes both to my frendes and servants as they shall thinke fitt. Item I bequeath unto the repayringe of the high waies within the parish of Camberwell (including that unpaid, devised by my uncle Draper which is not much) Five poundes. Item to the poore of Camberwell Tenne poundes to be distributed at my funerall, and alsoe Tenne poundes to the poore to be paid to the Collector for the poore of Camberwell, in Lieu of the Fine, and Trees which I have received and had out of Howletts acre, and the rents of the said Acre, to be paid yearely by my heires to the poore of Camberwell upon Goodfridaie as I have given it during my lief. I bequeath to the poore of Wansworth Five poundes, The poore of Newington Fiftie shillinges, The poore of Lambeth Fiftie shillinges, and the poore prisoners in the White Lion, Fortie shillinges, To Mr Dawson Vicar of Camberwell a mourning gowne, And to his cosen Edward Willsonn my Chapplein a mourning gowne and Five poundes in money, To everie of my Godsonnes which are not gentlmens children Fortie shillinges a peece, To my cosen Newton fortye shillinges to make a ring to weare for my sake. To Julian Johnson a widdowe who watcheth with me in my sicknes Fortie shillinges and a mourning gowne. Item I give to my little Godsonn Edmund Muschampe sonne of Francis Muschamp one hundred pounds and my Ring with a Saphire stone which I weare on daies, And to Elizabeth Muschampe and Marie Muschampe daughters of my Nephewe Francis Muschampe, I give one hundred poundes a peece, to be paid by my executors and Leasees out of the proffitts of my landes unto their father, after all the Legacies by me bequeathed shalbe paid and discharged Soe as he doe putt into my Leasees such sufficient as they shall like of, to paie to his said two sonnes, the two hundred poundes when they shall accomplish the age of Twentie and one yeares or be married, And to paie his said daughters the two hundred pounds when they shall accomplish the age of Twentie and one yeares, or at the daie of theire Marriage which shall first and next happen. Alsoe I willl that my Executors Duringe sixe monethes next after my decease shall not put out of my house, anie of my houshoulde servants that shalbe dwelling with me at the time of my death, but that my Executors shall keepe them with meate, drinke, and paie them wages during the said sixe monethes, within which time my servants maie prouide them newe services. And alsoe that my nephewe Mr Francis Muschampe and his wief with theire Children & servants shall have their dwelling and Lodging within my nowe mansion howse of Camberwell and meate drinke and Lodginge druing one whole yeare after my decease at the Charge of my Executors and Leasees, and to be allowed them againe in theire accompts. Item I give and bequeath to my Nephewe Charles Norton sonne of Sir Thomas Norton Two hundred poundes to be paid imediatlie after the rest of the foresaid legacies be paid Alsoe I will and my mynde and full intent is, That my executors shall withall convenient speed after my death, make sale of the Lease or Devise, and interrest that I have of the Mannor Messuage and Lands called the half Farthing, scituate and being in the parish of Wansworth in the said Countie of Surrey for the moste advantage and proffitt that they can, and with the money cominge or arising thereof my desire is, my executors shall paie the debts of my said Brother John Bowyer as farr as the same will paie and amount unto, my executors retayninge in theire handes, The some of two hundred and Fiftie poundes which my brother John oweth me, and all such other somes as I have disbursed for his funerall, and that I stand ingaged for his Debts, And touchinge the disposinge and ordering of the rest and residue of all and singuler my goodes & chattells remayning after my debts paid, the legacies in this my will performed and my funerall expences discharged. I wholie give and bequeath unto my Nephewe Edmund Bowyer sonne of my said brother Beniamyne to be paid unto him when he shall accomplish the full age of Eighteene yeares. And if the said Edmund Bowyer last named shall dye before he accomplish the said age, Then I bequeath his part of my personall estate unto my Nephewe Edmund Bowyer sonne of my said Brother Gregorie, And I make And ordaine my worthye good frind Sir Francis Cotton of Stockwell knight, and my auncient faithfull servant Martin Clerke my full executors of this my Last will and Testament Praying and charging them by all the deere love that hath benne betweene us to performe this my will and testament accordinge to my true meaninge. / And I bequeath to my said worthy good frend Sir Francis Cotton for a Remembrance, my greate silver standing Bowle double guilt with the cover to it, which the right honorable the Countesse of Warrwick gave me, and to his Ladie my salter Booke of praiers with a Cover imbrodred with my armes, Alsoe to him and his Ladie mourning gownes, Alsoe I bequeath to the said Martin Clerke Fortie poundes for his paines to be taken herein and a mourning Gowne, And likwise I ordaine and make to be overseers of this my will my Nephewe Mr Francis Muschamp Esquior, and doe give him a mourninge gowne, and forgive him the fortie poundes he oweth me which I laid fourth for Redeeming Mrs Harrwoodes Lease Alsoe my good friend Mr William Austen Esquior sonne to the Ladie Clerke, and I give him for his paines two Jacobusses, Mr good freind Mr Peter Dawson aforenamed, and I give him for his paines Three Jacobusses, Alsoe I will and Devise, that my executors shall have the Custodie, educacon, and bringing upp of my said Nephewe Edmund Bowyer last menconed sonne of my brother Beniamyne Bowyer and alsoe receive the proffitts of his Landes to bring him up withall, untill he accomplish his full age of Eighteene yeares, And I hartily praie them to have a speciall care to see him brought upp in Learning and in the feare of god. And I desire them to give to him an Accompt of all my landes and estate that shall appertaine to him when as he shall accomplish his said age of Eighteene yeares, And if it shall happen at anie time hereafter anie ambiguity doubt or question to growe or arise by reason of the imperfeccon of defect of or in anie the words, Clauses, or sentences in this my will, or my true intent or meaninge therein, That then the further and better explanacon interpretacon and Construccon of the said doubts and ambiguities I will shalbe expounded, explained and interpreted, by my true and good frend Mr Francis Myngaye Esquior according to his Learning, Wisdome, and good Discrecon, And I doe give him for his paines to be taken therein Tenne poundes. Item I give and bequeath to Katherine and Anne Draper Daughters of my ould servant James Draper to each of them five pounds Item I give to Mrs Dawson wief of Peter Dawson viccar of Camberwell Fortie shillinges to buy her a Ring. Item I give and bequeath to Mr Gwilliams Clerke nowe Lecturer in the parish of Camberwell Five poundes. Whereas by my last will and Testament I Sir Edmund Bowyer knight bequeathed unto Francis Muschamp sonne of my Nephewe Francis Muschampe Esquior One hundred poundes, and the said Francis the sonne being dead, I give and bequeath the said hundred poundes to his mother my Neece Jane Muschampe wief of the said Francis Muschampe. And my will and meaninge is, that my executors doe paie unto her owne handes and for her owne use the interrest of the said hundred poundes yearely untill such time as the said hundred poundes be paid unto her by my executors, And I give and bequeath more unto my said neece Jane Muschampe my warming cupp of silver, with the Cover, and my silver and guilt Casting botle. This was read over to the said Sir Edmund Bowyer knight, he being of perfect mynde and memorie, and he acknowledged it was his true meaninge and and [sic] willed it should be annexed alsoe as a Codicill to his last will the Fifteenth of February 1626 in the presence of us, and Subscribed his name.
