Edith Abbott was born in 1876 at Islington in the northern suburbs of London. She was the daughter of Emma Abbott, formerly Tozer, and her husband John Abbott, a carpenter. By 1881 the family had moved to Tottenham, where they lived at 3 Byron Terrace on Woodville Grove. The 1891 census finds Edith living with her sister Emma at 38 Cornwallis Road back in Islington.

In 1895, aged about nineteen, Edith married Alfred James Savage in the St Pancras area of London. He worked as a piano fitter. They went on to have four children between 1896 and 1904, all born in Islington. The 1901 census finds them living at 12 Kingsdown Road in Islington, whilst in 1911 they were living at 66 Chalk Farm Road in St Pancras. Alfred's brother Charles and his family were living with them at that time.

By 1932 Alfred and Edith had moved to Dartford in Kent. Two of Alfred's siblings, Lily and Walter, had earlier also moved to Dartford. Edith died there in 1932, aged 55. She was buried in Dartford on 2nd February 1932. Alfred survived her by about thirty years.
