Ernest Mann was born in Philadelphia. He married Catharina Cruts in Sussex, New Jersey in 1797, and they had 10 children. Late in his life - in his 60s - he relocated to Macomb county, Michigan with is wife and several of his children's families. He made his will there shortly before making a trip back to New Jersey to visit the family that was still living there. He was crushed to death in an accident on the Erie Canal in Lockport, New York. He died at the age of 72 and was buried back in Michigan.
