According to one source, Dorsey was born in Red Mountain Top, Georgia, but the 1940 Census records and his death certificate both list his birthplace as Tennessee.S1, S4, S5

After his parents died, Dorsey and his siblings were taken in by foster parents, John and Mary Knox.S1, S2

Dorsey's known siblings are his brothers "B" and Mac, and one sister, Vera Lee.S1, S2

Dorsey's occupation is listed at "truck driver" on one of his daughter's birth certificates.S1 At the time of his death, Dorsey's occupation was listed as "farmer."S5

In 1940, Dorsey was living in Rockwood, Tennessee, with his wife and four children.S4

Death

Dorsey died at his home in Rockwood, Tennessee at 11:30 am on October 28th, 1942.S5 According to his eldest daughter, Betty, Dorsey died due to cancer, which was caused by a sliver of metal that was lodged in his eye during a work accident.S3 His death certificate seems to indicate cause of death as "bronchial pneumonia due to septicemia from infection of [illegible]."S5

At Dorsey's funeral, Betty, his eldest daughter, crawled in the coffin with him. Supposedly Dorsey was buried without his head, as his wife was persuaded to donate it for scientific research.S3
