Doris W. Ratcliff, 98, active in women's issues RICHMOND -- Doris W. Ratcliff, 98, of Gloucester died Saturday at home. She was the mother of the late William N. Ratcliff of Richmond. Born in Newport, Maine, on March 5, 1903, daughter of Hubert M. and Cordelia Merrill Wardwell, she was a graduate of Boston University in 1926. She was a former resident of Peabody. Mrs. Ratcliff was an active member of the Gloucester and Peabody women's clubs for many years, as well as the Daughters of the American Revolution. She had a deep appreciation for the arts and music, playing many instruments, including the cello. She also enjoyed singing and photography. Living on the Annisquam River, Mrs. Ratcliff enjoyed sailing and boating with her sons and their families. She was the wife of the late William J.D. Ratcliff. She leaves a son, Wardwell Ratcliff of Gloucester; eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for family and friends will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of PIKE-GRONDIN FUNERAL HOME, 61 Middle St., Gloucester. Mrs. Ratcliff is also survived by two daughters-in-law, Alison deWitt (Walsh) Ratcliff of Gloucester and Marylyn M. (Poulter) Ratcliff of Richmond; eight grandchildren, Dawn Stopyra, Desna Ratcliff, Robin Staub, William Ratcliff, Heather Ratcliff, Jonathan Ratcliff, Jeremy Ratcliff and Holly Ratcliff; six great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters, Eleanor, Virginia and Lucille, and two brothers, Hubert and Norman. -Berkshire Eagle February 21, 2002
