Dr. Doris E. Sherer, THD went peacefully to be with the Lord on June 19, 2010 at Mercy Hospital. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, June 26 at Brooks South Town Chapel, 7601 Fleur Drive, Des Moines with entombment at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

She was born April 23, 1933 to Kenneth and Laura Smothers in Minburn, IA. Doris worked at Younkers for 38 years. She also sang with the Sweet Adelines in her younger years in Iowa City, IA. She, along with her son, Michael, were child evangelists.

Doris served as President for the ABWA for one year and also as President of the AARP local Chapter 153 for one year.

Doris received her Doctorate of Theology from Kingsway Cathedral.

Doris was married to Delbert Neese for 33 years and then married Kenneth Sherer in 1987. Together they sang in the Happy Trail Songsters for many years.

Survivors include her mother, Laura Smothers; sisters, Shirley, Janet, Laura Lea and Rhonda; daughter, Ann Burgess; daughter-in-law, Linda Neese; grandchildren, Laura, Keith (Racheal), Steven (Tamika), Mark, Matt (Amanda), Nick (Alli); several great-grandchildren; and special friend, Denise Furlong.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Sherer; father, Kenneth Smothers; brother, Loren Smothers; son, Michael Neese; son-in-law, Steven Burgess; one infant brother; and one infant great-granddaughter, Shyrae Jamez.
