OBITUARY

Interment: East Lawn Cemetery ~ Algona, Iowa Donald George Mains was born on March 23, 1921, near Greenfield, Iowa, to Jonathan Henry and Iva Fern James Mains. He graduated from the Guthrie Center High School in Guthrie Center, Iowa in 1940. After his schooling, Don worked on farms in the Algona, Iowa area. He served his country during World War II in the United States Marine Corps, serving mainly in the Pacific Theater. After the service, Don continued working for farmers near Algona and then started farming for himself. Don was married to Marian Blanche Smith on April 17, 1948, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa. The couple farmed southeast of Algona for 2 years and then farmed in Cresco township for 1 year. The couple then moved to the Sexton area and farmed. In 1997 they moved into Wesley, Iowa.

Don was a member of the Grace Baptist Church in Corwith, Iowa. He also belonged to the Andrews American Legion Post #428 in Wesley. Don enjoyed reading, Bible study and traveling. He enjoyed farming, not only as a vocation, but as a hobby.

Don became a resident of the Titonka Care Center in Titonka, Iowa in 2007. He died on Sunday, April 27, 2008, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt, Iowa. He was 87.

Surviving are his wife, Marian of Wesley, Iowa and their children, Delmar Mains and wife, Melody, Ames, Iowa, Carol (C.J.) Mains, Wesley, Iowa and Allen Mains, Wesley, Iowa. Also surviving are 3 step grandchildren, Holly Boyd, Heidi Davis and Heather Wiyninger and 4 brothers, Ellis Mains, Algona, Iowa, Ralph Mains and wife, Bette, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Dale Mains and wife, Lucille, Algona, Iowa and Edwin Mains, Des Moines, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Wesley.
