BRADLEY, DOMINICK, labourer, 11 Prosperous Alley (ours should be too young to be listed)

--- There is a D. Bradley in the 1840 PA census index in Phili, Locust W. page 105.

Jz finds Domminick Bradley, age 25, a farmer from who departed Londonderry, arriving Phili on July 15 1843 on the ship Salon. This is consistent with the naturalization papers recorded below in 1846. Could this be the son of Domminick above?

In a boxing sense, Philadelphia once launched more home runs than Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa in tandem. As far back as 1857, Philadelphia's Dominick Bradley claimed the "World Heavyweight Prizefighting Championship" by defeating Sam Rankin of Baltimore in a brutal, early-morning, bare-knuckle contest in a Canadian cornfield. Bradley won in the 157th round for a $2,000 side bet, and although his claim was not universally recognized, details of the match were covered in the international sporting press.

If this is the same fellow as cited above, he is losing years -- he should be 42 vs. 34 in 1860. Possible/likely?:

O'Brallaghan, Bradley

Few Irish surnames have been more barbarously maltreated as a result of the introduction of the English language into Ireland than O Brollachain, which for some extraordinary reason was generally given as its anglicized form the common English name of Bradley, though in a few places, notably in Co.Derry, it is quite rationally called in English O'Brallaghan. No doubt a proportion of the Bradleys in Ireland are descendants of English settlers, but those who bear the name in the counties adjacent to Co. Derry and also in Co. Cork have justification for believing that they are really O'Brallaghans, because it was in those areas that the sept originated, the Cork line being a branch which in early times migrated southwards. Actually they are first heard of in Co. Tyrone, the county adjacent to Co. Derry on its southern border. It is interesting to note that modern statistics show that Counties Derry, Tyrone and Donegal are still the homeland of most Irish Bradleys, with Cork their main stronghold in the south. (O) Brolloghan is a cognate from of (O) Bralloghan.

According to Mr. W. Maxwell-Brodie, the O'Brologhans of the Western Highlands of Scotland were of the same stock as the O'Brologhans of Derry whose name has been anglicized as Brodie in modern times. A remarkable number of O'Brallaghans (or rather O'Brollachain for the English language was then unknown in Ireland) distinguished themselves in the eleventh and twelfth centuries: maelbrighde O'Brollachain (d. 1029) builder; his sons Aedh (d. 1095), professor, and Maelbrighde, bishop of Kildare (1097-1100); another , Donal O'Brollachain (d.1202), was Abbot of Deny: while Flaibhertach O'Brollachain (d. 1175) rebuilt the Cathedral at Derry in 1164. The only Irishman of special note called Bradley was Most Rev. Denis Mary Bradley (1846-1903), a Kerryman popular with all denominations in his diocese of Manchester (New England).

St. Joseph's Catholic Church was organized in 1732 in Philadelphia county, Pennsylvania (now city of Philadelphia.) The first mass in Philadelphia is said to have been celebrated in 1708.

Catholics were present around Philadelphia (English, Irish and German) by 1720-30 in large enough numbers to cause Father Joseph Greaton, a Jesuit, to come from Maryland to found the church in 1732. The church was located at Willing's Alley below Fourth, and Father Greaton first served there.

The records for St. Joseph's which are abbstracted in this work were found in the Journals of the American Catholic Historical Society, Vols 1-40+ which are held in most Diocesan Headquarters in the United States.

1844

Discrimination against Catholic school children and the rise of the Nativist, "Know-Nothing" movement reached into Philadelphia’s public schools. Debates over the types of religious teaching methods used led in part to Anti-Catholic riots that lasted over a three day period in which 13 were killed, several wounded, a library, and two Catholic churches – St. Augustine and St. Michael, were burned by protestors.
