He attended public schools of South Wales and East Aurora, NY. He left home before finishing high school and worked as a tool and die maker for 4 years and finished high school by attending night school. Attended Muskingum College in New Concord, OH from 1928 to 1932. He served in the U.S. Armny Medical Corps on Corregidor in the Philipines from 1932 to 1935. After marrying Laura, they moved to Los Angeles, California in 1937.
