Facts and Events
In the 1940s, Dawson worked as the river route mail carrier delivering mail by boat to all who lived along the water ways of Magnolia Springs. he also worked later at Moore's Store, one of the only competitor of his sister-in-law, Mary Laurent-Barnard, who owned a grocery store and beer joint for the locals. His wife, Elizabeth "Elsie" Laurent worked as a cook/pastry chef. Many remember her for brewing illegal beer called "home brew" in her bathtub. Elsie & Dawson loved to drink and watch the boxing matches on the B & W TV owned by their married siblings, Duval Laurent & Betty Weeks. Dawson died March 8, 1961 at his home in Magnolia Springs, Alabama from a long, unknown illness (possibly skin cancer) after being stung by a stingray while floundering in Weeks Bay. Friends say that it became so bad that all the mirrors in the house were either removed or covered up to keep him from seeing the ravages of the disease. |
