David Nelson Stevens and Lydia Jane Hubbard are shown in Bell Co, TX in the 1870 Census, Aiken P.O., Pct 2. They came to Texas on the Stevens Wagon Train in 1859 and stayed in Denton Co for a time but are then shown in the 1860 Census as living back in Jackson Co, Indiana. His father was a grocer in Jackson Co. When the Civil War came along, David, being a Union sympathizer, took his family back to Bell Co, TX and went back up north to join the Union Army. (Mary Morrow Brashear recalls that the women made uniforms for the Union Army during the conflict.)

David Nelson owned 800 acres of farmland in Bell County near the Leon River, which were eventually divided up between all his sons except David Curtis, who did not take a portion. David Nelson and family lived most of the time in Bell County but also owned Stevens Ranch on Cowhouse Creek, in Evant, Texas (Hamilton County) David & Lydia were originally buried at Old Brownscreek Cemetery but moved to Restland Cemetery in Gatesville in 1942 when Fort Hood was expanded. They are in Lot #31, spaces 6 & 7.

Was said to be a rather large, tall man.
