David Pole rose to the rank of Bishop of Peterborough by 1558. In his earlier career he spent some time in Coventry, the area where Boudwyn Pole and subsequent Poles were born. The name Boudwyn(Bawdwyne) is mentioned in his will, as well as Abraham, increasing the probability he was Boudwyn Pole's father. German Pole of Radborn is named as his patron at his appointment as Rector of Longford in 1540, (see Church of England clergy website) meaning he was almost certainly a member of the Pole family of Radbourne, although it may well be he was a younger brother and not the son of German Pole. Longford is also the location where John Pole(b 1585) eventually settled, and Longford church is where a large number of Poles in this tree were christianed, married or buried. A coincidence or something to do with David Poles association with Longford? David Pole is said to have been imprisoned by the Tudors as part of their persecution of the clergy, and died in Fleet prison in 1568. He was admitted as a fellow to All Souls college Oxford in about 1520, and contributed several valuable manuscripts and funds to the college in later years |
