One evening when David was going to shoot a wild deer in their yard, his gun exploded, sending a spring from the gun back into his heart. This comes from Gail McLain's book. Lester Sparks McLain has the same memory.

In the family record book found in Gail's book Feb. 21, 1847 is birthdate and born in Williams Co., Ohio.

His death prayer after having been shot, "Father have mercy upon me. Lord Jesus forgive me and save my soul."

Information from Charlene McLain Anderson: David Leonard McLain died Oct. 14, 1903 at Butternut, Wisconsin age 55 yr. 7 mo-2da. death accidental. Shell exploded in rifle and blew part of shell ejector through heart. His prayer. "Father have mercy upon me, Lord Jesus forgive me and save my soul" Present at death wife Ellen, son Augustus, James Hall, nephew, Mrs. Geo. Tanner, Robert Tanner neighbors. Dr. Malcolm Violet called and made examination of gun pronounced death caused by gun shell explosion peice of which passed through the heart by probing could feel the piece. (This is from a copy of a letter to Grant McLain apparently from his father Cyrenus Augustus).
