Confusion Between David Melvin (W) Jeffcoat and David Owins /Owens Jeffcoat Posted 28 Feb 2014 by Rebecca Jackson-Henderson

I have been very confused and puzzled about my Jeffcoat family line.  I was told my 3 x great grandparents were David Jeffcoat and Irene W. Holmes.  Then found it as David Owins Melvin Jeffcoat when began researching.  On my grandfather some calling him David Owins Melvin Jeffcoat and some calling him David Melvin Jeffcoat. I was confused when I saw his name to be David W. Jeffcoat.  Was told that was an error and W should have been an M.  When tracing found his parents to be Elijah J Jeffcoat (1794-1863) and Mary Ann Pelham (1797-1872).Then in researching saw a second wife Rebecca C. Jackson. Thought might be possible since I knew my grandmother had died in a chicken coop fire at their home.  Then I saw all the children's birthday's.  They were born in the same years from the two different mothers.  Did David have two seperate wives, traveling between the two.  Why did I see that David W. Jeffcoat died at the Battle of Chickamanga.  The Great Puzzle has finally been solved.

David Owins Melvin Jeffcoat and David Melvin (W) Jeffcoat, are two seperate men.  Both descendents of Samuel Jeffcoat and cousins.  Some have combined their names and their history.  As previous thought and taught, my grandfather was David Melvin (W) Jeffcoat.  The W was incorrect.  The other David was David Owins Jeffcoat, or some saying it was David Owen Jeffcoat.

David Owins/Owen Jeffcoat (did not die in the Battle of Chickamanga) he was the son of Daniel Jeffcoat Sr. and Pherebie Neese.  He was married to Rebecca C. Jackson.  He was born May 17, 1824 and died July 20, 1879.  See Find a grave #49620774 were it shows his headstone.  Buried Lebanon United Methodist Church Cemetery in Orangeburg, South Carolina.  The same state as his parents are buried and lived.

David Melvin Jeffcoat also known as David W. Jeffcoat (my 3 X great grandfather) was the son of Elijah J Jeffcoat (1794-1863) and Mary Ann Pelham (1797-1872).  He was married to Irene W Jeffcoat.  David Melvin Jeffcoat was born in the year 1832 (month and day not known).  He died in the Battle of Chickamanga on September 20, 1863.  His Find a grave memorial is #98812839.

      • UPDATE March 3, 2014--Judy Campbell decendent of James Millard Jeffcoat, the brother to my gg grandmother Sarah Isabelle Jeffcoat Jackson now has a possitive DNA match  to prove that she is related to the Pelham Family.  At the time of our correspondance she had already received 10 matches.  Thus proving the above information that David Melvin (W) Jeffcoat is the son of Elijah J Jeffcoat and Mary Ann Pelham.
