David Hatch was born on September 20, 1842 in Randolph, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. He is one of seven children of Samuel Hatch and Caroline Weller. After his mother died, Samuel married Rachel McIntosh and they had six more children. On September 3,1861, when David was almost nineteen, he joined the Northern forces in fighting the Civil War. David and his brother Moses joined the 83rd Regiment, Company F. from Meadville, Pennsylvania. David fought in the war for almost four years, mustering out on June 28, 1865.

After the war, David moved to Kane County, Illinois where he worked as a farm laborer. It was in Kane County, Illinois where he met and married Rebecca Jane McClelland on May 21, 1870. They had four children, Samuel, Frederick, Musa May, who died when she was two years old, and Edwin. In 1883, David and Rebecca and their three boys moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. While living in Minneapolis, their son Edwin got sick and died on September 28, 1886. David worked as a lumberjack clearing a lot of trees in the area around Minneapolis. When they got older Sam and Fred also worked as lumberjacks with their father. They also did lumberjacking in northern Minnesota. On November 1, 1897, David died, leaving his wife Rebecca and their two sons, Sam and Fred. David is buried at Lakewood Cemetery, in the Civil War Veterans section, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
