    "53. Capt. David5 Coe (Capt. Joseph4, Capt. John3, Robert2, Robert1), born in Durham, Conn., Feb. 18, 1715-16 [error for 1716/17; see Durham VR], about 1740 settled in that part of Middletown which is now Middlefield, where he became a successful farmer and an influential factor in public affairs. As 'David Coe Sr.' he appears in Middletown in the U. S. Census of 1790, heading a family of one male over sixteen years, no males under sixteen years, and four females. In May 1759 he was commissioned lieutenant of the 16th company of the 6th regiment of Conn. militia; and in May 1764 was promoted to captain of same. (Colonial Records of Conn., 1757-1762, p. 336; and 1762-1767, p. 254.) During the Revolution, although too advanced in years to take the field, he was active in other ways in the patriot cause. … Capt. Coe … he died Jan. 14, 1807, aged nearly ninety-one years; …"
