It seems that Daniel must have lived, after his first marriage at Fern Rocks (which was the third farm to come into the possession of his family) for several of his children were born there. Presumably Joseph Junior was still living on Doornberg at this time, though, at his death, Doornberg was inherited by Daniel. It seems that Daniel's second marriage caused much bad feeling in the family and so he "got away from it all" by taking a trip by horse and buggy, to Zastron, O.F.S., where he bought "Spring Valley" farm; he returned to Doornberg, which he sold to the BOWKER family in 1895, and took his family back with him to the farm near Zastron. "Spring Valley" eventually became too much of a burden to him, as his sons refused to be his partners, so he sold the farm. His wife suggested that they settle in Mafeking, Basotuland, but this did not appeal to Daniel; instead he found a house in Aliwal North, in about 1920. He was an ardent Methodist, and collected funds in Aliwal North, to which he himself donated £25, for the building of an Anglican Church at Olifantshoek, where his son Denham Cameron, had a farm. After his second wife died, in Aliwal North, his daughter Lilian kept house for him until his death.
