“Young Dan Keefe, a tugboat worker gifted with Irish charm and limitless energy, entered the umpromising field of labor organization by founding an obscure longshore union on the Great Lakes. Keefe was dynamic, ambititous, and had a far better grasp of economics and current affairs then several union leaders of his day. . . he knew the difference between the obtainable and the impossible, and he had the instincts of a born poker player. He could sense when to call a bluff and when to toss in his hand” Men Along the Shore the I. L. A. and Its History P42
