Daniel (or Donald) was the third son of the 3rd laird of Finzean in Aberdeenshire. Not expecting any inheritance, he moved to Aberdeen to make his way, where he became a successful merchant, married, and had five children. After the death of his wife, he and his children moved to Campbeltown, in the southwest of Scotland, where he was appointed Controller of Customs.
