Daviess Co, MO marriage records have his marriage to Mollie Place on 12 Feb 1890. He is listed as a widow in 1900, and remarried to another woman named Mary in 1910 and 1930. He had three children by his first marriage, at least one of which may have accompanied his first wife when she moved to California. He had a son Virgil by his second marriage.

Although death certificate gives his birthdate as 2 Dec 1840, census records from when he was a child/young man indicate he was born in 1848 (and his mother would have been only 11 in 1840). Later in life he seems to have tacked 8 years onto his age. It is assumed, however, that his son (the informant) was correct regarding his birthday.
