Birth? 13 Jan 1823 Fishkill, New York

He served in the 20th New York militia from the beginning of the Civil War, and helped organize the 120th New York Regiment in 1862. He served as Colonel of this regiment at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and most memorably at Gettysburg, where the regiment particularly distinguished itself in an overall Union disaster near the Peach Orchard on the second day of the battle. Along with the nearly 50% of the regiment who were casualties, he was wounded and never returned to full active duty. There is a monument to the 120th on Sickles Ave. just north of U.S. Ave., and his name is inscribed on the general New York state monument on the battlefield.
