Clyde was Tony Abshier's stepfather, but he was considered by Tony to be his "Dad". I have not yet located any adoption papers, but family sources tell me that Tony was formally adopted by Clyde. Jerry T. Abshier states that Tony's biological father had the surname of Clem. Clyde's age is given as 26 years old in the 1920 census. This would have made his year of birth 1893 or 1894.

In March of 2004 I located a reference to Clyde R. Abshier on Ancestry.com, which told of his WWI draft registration in Evansville, Indiana. It also gave me his birthdate, which which is corroborated with the census information. I also located Clyde in the 1930 census for St. Louis Mo., with his wife Audrey and "adopted son" Anthony Abshier. This is the only source I have located which refers to my grandfather Tony as 'Anthony'. Clyde listed his occupation as 'carpenter'. I also located a "Clyde Abshire" on the Social Security Death index (SSAN 494-09-8285) which gave his date of birth as April of 1963.

Besides being a carpenter, Clyde also worked in the shipyards in Long Beach, CA during WWII with Tony. Clyde and Audrey's 50/50 house ($50 down, and $50 per month) was located in Crenshaw Villa, at 3613 133rd Street, in Hawthorne. It was five or six doors down from Tony and Nell's house at 133rd and Yukon. My Dad (J.T. Abshier) explained that after Clyde built a 4-plex on 139th Street, he sold it and built another house at 4218 132nd (Cross street - Washington). This was the house that Audrey lived in until she died. In the early to mid-1950's Clyde moved to 1634 South Main St., Stuttgart, Arkansas and married family friend Ester Ritchie (maiden name unknown).
