ILL: poly-neuritis of spine

Cliff attended school through the 8th grade. He began working at McLeod & Smith in his teen years as a office helper. He eventually learned the business well enough to begin in funiture sales. He met Myrtle at a planned picnic with a group of mutual NE friends. They dated about a year and decided to marry at age 22. Myrtle was two years older and they moved into a four plex on 15th St. NE. Three children were born to them at this location, and in 1925 they needed more room and purchased a house in south Mpls. on Clinton. Orginally they lived on the ground floor and rented out the upstairs. Cliff worked his way up in the company and eventually became president. Sometime in the 20’s, four men bought the company (Joe Lahar, Oscar Pearson, Ernie Erickson, and Cliff) from Neil McLeod and Hiram Smith and kept the orginal name. Cliff may have had controlling stock interest in the co. and remained the president. During the depression of the 30’s, business became unstable and they had union problems. They company may have gone into bankruptcy by 1938, so Cliff reorganized into a much smaller co. and established the Cliff P. Peterson Co. in about 1939/40. In 1941 Cliff rented a building at 18 N. 3rd St. and began a small independent speciality furniture business of reholstering booths for restaurants. In the summer of 1948, he bought the building at 2608 1st Ave. So. and continued in business. Cliff got sick in the late 40’s with poly-neuritis of his spine and had difficulty walking. He also had eye glacoma which turned to cancer. He got very sick in July 1952 and died of liver cancer in Sept. at home.

Clifford was born at 517 South 12th Avenue in Minneapolis. Grew up in NE Mpls. neighborhoods. Clifford was seven years old when his father died in June, 1900. He went through the eight grade and was a young boy when he started helping at McLeod and Smith Furniture. This business was a few blocks from where he and his mother lived at 827 3rd Ave. NE. Clifford and Myrtle met at a planned picnic with a group of mutual friends. They dated for a year before deciding to marry. Their wedding was held at Emanual Lutheran Church in a quiet cememony on June 30, 1915. Mrytle was 24 and Cliff was 22 years old. Their witnesses were Ruth Duresen and A. N. Krohl.
