Joseph Clements Grote left Germany for America 14 May 1849, at the age of 23 or 24. He was likely accompanied by his brother Bernardus. In subsequent records from Cincinnati he is referred to as Clemens.

Clemens married Mary Catherine Overbeck on 16 September 1856, in Cincinnati, Ohio. She may be buried on his cemetery lot where there is a Mary K. Grote who died in 1859. There are no recorded children for this marriage.

In 1859, as listed in the Cincinnati Williams directory, Clemens is a grocer at 193 Linn St. He is listed as 33 years old. The following year Clemens married Josephine Mairwurm in Cincinnati (believed to be St. Anthony parish).

On the 1860 Hamilton County census, Clemens was living in Ward 8, he was 32 years old, a grocer from Oldenburg. He wife, Josephine, was 21 years old and from Prussia.
