" Clarence Hartmann may have been the finest athlete in the history of Dyer High School. He pitched and started on the baseball team from 1925-29. He was the captain all four years and helped the team win the Lake-Porter County Championship in 1929. He was a starter and captain of the basketball team as well.

His greatest fame may have been in track. He was a four year letter winner and captain, winning many awards and events. In 1929, his senior year, he won the high jump, long jump, 100 yard dash and 200 yard dash at the Sectionals. He was the first athlete ever to qualify for a state event and finished second in the state in the high jump with a leap of six feet. He was invited to participate in the prestigious Stagg Interscholastic Track Meet in Chicago his senior year. He later went on to Purdue University where he won three major varsity letters in baseball, and one major and minor letter in track."
