MADISON - Claire L. Stillman, 74, a retired insurance underwriter formerly associated with the Milwaukee Automobile Insurance Co., died Tuesday in a Madison hospital of a heart condition.
Mr. Stillman was born in 1886 in Utica, Dane County. He was a graduate of Milton College and did graduate work at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He married Jewell D. Mitchell of Argyle. He was a former school teacher at Dodgeville, Monticello and Monroe; a trustee of Milton College for many years, and had his own insurance firm in Monroe before joining the Milwaukee firm. They lived in Wauwatosa for 25 years before moving to Madison in 1958. He was a member of the First Methodist Church, Madison.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Robert, New York, and John, Milwaukee; two daughters, Mrs. Robert Zirkle, Jackson, Miss., and Mrs. J. Brookes Spencer, Madison; a sister, Miss Rose Stillman, Milton; a brother, James, Houston, Tex; and six grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Joyce Funeral Home, 540 W. Washington St., Madison, the Rev. Carl Stromberg, First Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Memory Gardens, Madison.
