CAPTAIN OF PENNSYLVANIA MILITIA

PIONEER OF THE OHIO FRONTIER

FIRST SETTLER OF WHAT BECAME PERRY CO., OH

In 1801, at the age of 64, Christian settled in Perry Co., Ohio, with his sonsJohn, Adam, and Henry. George Overmeier was the Justice of the Peace and PeterDittoe the recorder at the signing of Christian's will 5 May 1829.

"A man by the name of George Arnold had entered some land in Reading Township, where the town of New Reading now is. He did not settle on the land, but sold it to Christian Binckley, the great-grandfather of Capt. T. D. Binckley, present Representative from this county. He thus became the first permanent settler, as far asknown. He came from Washington County, Maryland." --History of Perry County, 1902, p. 79

"In attempting to cross the Ohio River misfortune overtook the [Peter Obermeier] family and nearly all of their household goods were lost and his horses were drowned. No lives were lost and luck was with them in that PeterWhitmore, who had married Peter Overmyer's sister, Mary Magdalena, lived nearbyand shared his home with them till spring came and the journey was resumed. This time the crossing was made in safety and they reached their destination of what was later Perry County, in Ohio. Peter [Obermeier] was the second settler in that locality that spring of 1802. The first had been Christian Binkley. A number of settlers came soon after, among them Peter Whitmore and family, and thefirst town 'Overmyersettle', (German for Overmyertown) was organized." --Overmier History and Genealogy 1813-1962, Edited by Melvern D. Overmier, et. al.

WARNING: Some show Christian born in Lancaster Co., PA. Christian's parentage has not been proven.

"Even with ALL the documents, there just isn't any PROOFthat Hans Michael Binkley is the father of Capt. Christian Binkley of Perry County, Ohio." --Ann's Ancestor Album

He joined up,left his family ,was a captian. He was an elderly man,64,when he decided to go west with his family ,ohio was west back in 1800. He traveled through the wilderness on a trail that would not even allow wagons. All they're belongings had to be carried on their backs or on horseback . It's unheard of ,of a man his age doing something like that. My line is from his son,Adam, then David, then Aaron. They're all buried in the cemeterey.

The Binkley family is as large as the lost tribe of Israel. Maybe even larger. We trace our line back to Bern Switzerland. There is information back to Peter Binggelli and Magdalena Spring in 1656. One of their sons Hans Christian(10-10-1669 to 1713) married: Elizabeth (Elsbeth )Burri or Berg (4-11-1669 to 1711 ? ) in Bern Switzerland on 10-20-1693 .
