Daughter of William and Olive Horton. First husband James V. Ditmar[s] died August 10, 1863 while stationed with the Company D of the 38th Iowa Infantry in the swamps near Vicksburg, MS.They lived in Ionia County MI in the 1850s where James worked as a lumberman. At some point between the 1854 MI census when James Ditmars is still in Otisco Twp, Ionia Co, MI and 1860, they moved to Iowa.

In 1900, she has living with her "niece" Ella Bingham, b. Mar 1881 in Iowa, whose parents were born in Iowa and NY. Since none of John's brothers or sons were born in Iowa, obviously something's incorrect.

James and Charlotte Ditmars' only child was a son, Henry J. Ditmars, who married Mary Amelia Near. Mary Amelia Near had two sisters, Phebe and Hattie, who married William Eugene and Theron Bingham, both sons of James Bingham, who was John's younger brother. Ella therefore may have been her daughter-in-law's niece.
