Charles was carpenter, farmer, sailor. At age 34, in US Navy, was 5'8" tall, gray eyes, dark complexion. Navy pensioner #6511 (Civil War service)...enlisted numerous times at different places, began service prior to war. First enlistment at Toledo, OH. 1913/14 res boarded at 721 State st, Traverse City, MI.

Birthplace: obit = Mainz, Germany...enlistment rec=France...1900 census=PA...some family sources say Crawford co, PA....1880 census=France.

Erie co,PA 1822-1906 Naturalization Book lists Charles ZANG (b 1829) emmigrated from France in 1850. Certificate 7 Aug 1860, sponsor: Wm. WILSON.
