On 8 November 1903 contracts were awarded to build a sixty foot addition to the Owl pool hall, extending to building to the alley. This addition allowed Charles to add a ladies’ dining room to the Owl restaurant.
On 28 September 1904, Charles opened the “Chick’s Cafe”, which was said to be a “new eating house on Forest Ave.” and the “best equipped restaurant” the town (Parsons, Kansas) had ever had.
Charles served in the Spanish-American War. Records are in conflict as to the unit in which he served. The obituary refers to Company D, 40th Regiment, 8th Infantry. A pension application filled out by Charles in 1923 refers to what appears to be Company G, 4th regiment Texas Infantry, as well as Company D, 40th Regiment, U.S. Volunteer Infantry.
Charles served in World War I in Company A, 129th Machine Gun Battalion, and was overseas for 18 months.
Charles was a member of the Chillicothe, Ohio lodge of Eagles.
