Mattie (Gibson) Lewis says that Charles H. Saunders and his wife Mattie Elizabeth Barnes were first cousins. She said this resulted in a genetic eye condition that impaired the vision of several members of the family, including John William "Bill" Gibson, who when he underwent a physical in the Air Force was asked by the doctor if he had any people in his ancestry who were closely related.
