Educated at St. Mary's Infant's School, Gateshead and Carr Hill Primary School, Gateshead. This was followed by evacuation in 1939 to Auckland Park, Co. Durham and Gateshead Grammar School 1940-46. Trained as a teacher at Bede College Durham 1946-48.

Obtained a teaching post at Carr Hill Secondary School, Gateshead, but before starting was called up for National Service in the Air Force. He also taught at Prior St Secondary Modern School Gateshead and Dukeshouse Wood Residential Camp School at Hexham, Northumberland. After his first marriage he moved to a post at Eastbourne Secondary Boys School, Darlington teaching English and Physical Education. Moving to Primary Education he obtained posts in Darlington at Springfield and Firth Moor Junior Schools, at the latter as deputy head.
