Records of Campbell County, VA, document the freeing of his slaves. By deeds of manumission, on May 28, 1788, Charles provided for the freedom of his 33 slaves -- those of age immediately and those under age upon becoming of age. Deeds confirmed in his will of Sept 2, 1778.

Served as a captain in the Revolutionary army; died from a wound received at the Battle of Guildford Court House fought on 15 Mar 1781
