He moved to Monmouth, Warren Co, IL when he was about 10 yrs. old. He enlisted in the 136th Indiana Infantry, Co C where he made corporal in less than a year. He served with Sherman during the march to the sea. After the war, Charles attended Monmouth College, and graduated in 1869. On the day of his graduation, he and his wife Charlotte Henderson (who was also graduating) were married by the President of Monmouth College, Dr. D. A. Wallace. (Dr. Wallace was also William's second cousin.) Charles served as a clerk in the Illinois legislature in 1869.
Charles went on to attend seminary in Monmouth until 1872. He began preaching in 1872 when he was installed and ordained at Camp Creek, Illinois.
His pastorates included Camp Creek, Savanna, IL; Keota, Keokuk Co, IA( in 1888 ); Summerfield, KS; DeWitt (Clinton Co) IA; Golden (Adams Co) IL; Four Mile, Clay Center (Clay Co), and Americus (Lyon Co) KS. He retired after 50 yrs, in 1922. He also served as a moderator of NE synod in 1901, and KS synod in 1921.
He had the title Doctor of Divinity conferred by Sterling College in 1923.
