Although he had only six months of formal schooling, by reading while working on his grandfather's farm he prepared himself to preach in M.E. Church. His first circuit was of sic hundred miles in circumference through Vermont, New Hampshire and Canada. 

   After living several years in California, he and his family returned to live in Wyandotte Co.

After returning from Lebanon, Charles and Julia promoted the interest of The Free Methodist Church. He supported himself, worked on his farm, traveling, organizing classes, and preaching.
