Norman (Mick) Long states that Bill left home at the age of 14 to work as a boundary rider. He later worked for the railways as a bill poster around Melbourne. He was a large man, about 6'6" and 17 1/2 stone. He was a very good artist.

1921 - Bill is described as a railway employee, 40 years of age and born at Mt Gambier, South Australia. (Norman's birth certificate)
