Both parents from the Black Forest region (Baden) according to 1880 census. Note however that son Chas Clemence has him coming from Berlin in the1930 census. I guess I will stick with Baden.

1880 census for Allentown: "Works at furnace"

I note that there is a Karl Hofer from Gamburg, b Dec 1840 right by Tauberbisofsheim where Katherina (his wife) is from. I am going to assume thisis it.

I note that his wife Kate is indicated as remarrying in 1882 to a Frank Graf, in Ohio. I am having trouble finding out the details on this.
